when it happens
I reach into my chest
hold my heart in a
bloody grasp
feel its despair, throbbing
until I release my grip
slip into glacial
darkness

the sirens scream
ahead of me
around corners
through alleys
humouring the high rises
breaking into bars and bordellos
stopping the world with sound
so that I am able to pass
